iThink Idea Collection (2)

You never truly understand something until you can explain it to your grandmother.
-Apparently, it is assumed by the author that the senior female, who has more than one grandchild, tends to have difficulty in understanding something that the grandchild want to explain. However, insofar as the information from internet I collected, there is no evidence to show a possible connection between the capacity of understanding and  the gender and age, as long as she is not suffering the Alzheimer’s disease.
The victory one gets after hard work is priceless.
– True! especially given the common situation that the hard work doesn’t always produce victory.
Opposites attract in the short-run and turn into a disaster in the long-run.
– Strongly agree, but sometimes the long-term opposite attraction makes people suffer a larger disaster.
Seasons change, but people don’t.
-All people change, aside from the most intelligent/stupid ones. (唯上知與下愚不移为。《論語.陽貨》怎么翻译?)
Talent doesn’t come from birth.
-Really? I am not sure. Only sure that mine doesn’t.
The best way to predict the future is to create it.
-But neither of the ways is easy.
Don’t ever feel responsible for what your ancestors did in the past.
-That doesn’t look fair to me, I feel that most of parents are responsible for their offspring.
I can’t have a relationship with someone who can’t get along with my friends.
-But I think it should depend on your friends. What’s the content of the characters of them?
Cooking is an art; in this art, men are more artist than women.
-Perhaps men are more captious about food.

iThink Idea Collections

Here is a collection of the most popular ideas from iThink, an application of Facebook, with my personal comments. Because main language used by facebook users is English, I realize the way of presenting them are somehow dominated by an apparent western style. I don’t know. But for me, it’s really great to see that those basic values and wisdoms I trust are widely shared and recognized by people no matter which countries, ethic groups, religions, and social contexts they are from!!!

Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.
-In terms of feeling, true.
One is defeated not by losing, but by failing to try.
-It really makes me feel regret that two years ago when I got refused by a girl, I didn’t try again…
Things that you want but cannot have, are the things that make you grow.
-Not always true,  endometrial cancer, (I’m male.) for example…
Don’t delay acting on a good idea. Chances are someone else has just thought of it, too.
-Especially true in terms of publishing a paper,
Girls are like phones. We love to be held, talked to, but if you press the wrong button you’ll be disconnected!
– Are females always that proud? Obviously no, but males really should learn to treat girls equal, especially good looking ones.
Luck is essential for success.
-Some times it is true, but by working hard, one will have more chances to try the luck.

Mercy Corps – Update from Sichuan, China

Mercy Corps – Update from Sichuan, China
May 15, 2008

Dear Friends,

It’s the end of another busy day here in Sichuan Province. Today was a sad day — not
many survivors have been found in areas devastated by the earthquake. The sheer scale and
loss of this tragedy is hitting people hard.

Because you’ve made a donation to Mercy Corps, I wanted to write and give you an update
of what’s going on here. I’m currently in the city of Chongqing with two Mercy Corps
colleagues. We set up a emergency response center today with our local partner, the China
Foundation for Poverty Alleviation. We’ll be conducting all our relief operations from
there. Crews have started reaching devastated cities, and now is the critical time to
help survivors.

Today, we bought enough water, noodles, milk, crackers and shelter supplies to fill 22
truckloads. Those items are bound for Mianyang, a city about three hours from here that
was absolutely ravaged by the earthquake. At least 7,300 people were killed in that city
alone, and many more are missing. People are sleeping on the streets because they’re
afraid their homes will collapse from aftershocks.

Things are changing so fast. Today I felt that chaos. But your generous donations are
helping rush relief to survivors. You are making a difference.

My colleagues and I will continue to post updates on the situation at
http://www.mercycorps.org/chinaearthquake. Thank you again for your support. We couldn’t
do this without you.

Sincerely,

Kate Janis
Senior Program Officer
Mercy Corps

Appreciation to the Minibus Driver, Mr. Cheng Wing Keung.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Please allow me to express my thankfulness to the Minibus Driver: Mr. Cheng Wing Keung (Licenses: HW-**74, Mobile: 96****95) for his honesty and friendly help.

Here is my story. I lost my wallet when taking the Minibus from Central to University of Hong Kong around 10 o’clock in the morning on April 2nd, 2008. I put inside the wallet my ID card, staff card of Hong Kong U, two bank cards, one credit card, Octopus, and cash 662 HKD.

Mr. Cheng Wing Keung was the driver of the bus. When he found the wallet, he immediately tried to contact me. But there was no contact manner of me inside, so Mr. Cheng tried the phone numbers on the name cards I put in the wallet. Thank to his responsibility, one of my friends informed me and it was only two hours later when I got my wallet back without losing anything at the Hiking Wong Building minibus stop where Mr. Cheng drove by. I tried to thank him by sending some money, but he refused and drove away.

Surely, because of Mr. Cheng’s help, I was saved from a big trouble today. Moreover, I was deeply moved by Mr. Cheng’s honesty. Therefore, I want to express my appreciation to him through the Transportation Department who runs the public light bus business. I would like to thank the Transportation Department as well, since it helps to organize the whole public transportation services well in HKSAR and be able to recruit such highly qualified employees with honest and kindness as Mr. Cheng Wing Keung.

Best regards,

Shuda Li
